More about signs of pneumonia
Pneumonia is suspected when a doctor hears abnormal sounds in the chest, and the diagnosis is confirmed by a chest X-ray.
Signs of pneumonia caused by a virus usually go on for several days to a few weeks before you call your doctor.
Viral pneumonias are usually not very serious, but they can be life-threatening in very old and very young patients, and in people whose immune systems are weak. Bacterial pneumonia is caused by a pathogenic infection of the lungs and may present as a primary disease process or as the final coup de grace in the individual who is already debilitated. Some pneumonias have a more patchy distribution that does not involve specific lobes.
